Home Stars

A Hebrew touch-screen board for young children's daily routines, where every finished task feeds a creature that grows.

About

Young children need to see what comes next and want a reason to finish a routine by themselves. Home Stars puts the family's routines on a wall touch screen as big picture cards a child can follow without reading. Every finished task earns stars and grows the child's own creature. Parents manage routines and rewards from their phones, at home, with no accounts and no cloud.

Why I built it

Mornings and evenings with small children run on repetition, and repetition is exactly what children resist. Over the years I tried the usual tricks, a chart on the fridge, a row of push-button lights, a reward jar. Each worked for about a week. What I actually wanted was for the kids to run their own routine, and to spend their free time building the next day themselves. The answer that stuck was a game. Not a chart with stickers, a real one, where the only way to level up is to get the morning done. Once the creature on the wall started growing, nobody needed reminding.

What it does

Made for pre-readers
Big icon cards and one routine open at a time, so what comes next is always clear.
A creature that grows
Stars feed a creature through several forms, with surprise rewards along the way.
Parents in control
Routines, tasks and rewards edited from a phone behind a PIN.
Nothing to sign up for
Runs on a home server. No accounts, no cloud, no tracking.
Motivation without competition
Each child races only their own progress. Stars never expire and are never taken away.
Morning, evening and free time
A routine for each part of the day, and a schedule the child builds alone in free time.
Surprise boxes and accessories
Finished routines earn surprise boxes with accessories the creature wears.
The island
A game map with locked areas, each opened with a tool earned on the board.

How it works

The wall screen and the parents' phones share one state on a home server. Each tap turns into stars and creature growth, and rewards wait for a parent's approval.
